Why routine breaks work: You may recall from the introduction that productivity gurus tend to downplay goal setting. They say the process is most important. Follow a good process and you’ll achieve your goals. I’ve mentioned I’m somewhere in between. Goals do help drive us and so does the process. The word “goal” was not common until 1920. Not sure what people did before then but we can imagine they didn’t carry around an expensive daily planner.
Goals are motivators. For someone like me who struggles with tunneling, goals are also important because I can divide up my thought process and not stay so hyperfocused on one or two main objectives.
That’s why the routine to take a break is so critical, and not just for those with my personality type. We all struggle with tunneling to some degree. We might lead a team of programmers at work or decide to charge forward with a new social media campaign in the marketing department and that’s all we can think about. Taking a break that’s intentional and planned—and does not actually involve the breakroom, as you’ll see in the routine—means you can re-focus, re-calibrate, and re-energize.
